| Re: Atomic Bomb: Good or Bad?
Well, lets consider the circumstances in which the president might use the H-bomb. (the new A-bomb, many, many times as powerful as what hit hiroshima and nagasaki). On what condition would he make such a decision? We would have to be at war. Not the sort of war we're in right now, where the citizens are mixed right in with the soldiers, but an open war with another country. Modern politics just won't allow the president to make such a heinous decision unless there is absolutely no way around it. I don't think there will ever be another circumstance in which a soverign nation uses a nuclear weapon against another.
Also, I realize that America is the only country to ever use Atomic weaponry offensively. I believe, though, that when we used the A-bomb, we showed the rest of the world (and ourselves, for that matter) just how horrible this technology was. In the decades since then, there has been no use of atomic weaponry on other people. I hate to be the devil's advocate in this, but I think that the use of the A-bomb wasn't entirely wasted. It gave a valuable lesson to humanity about the horrors of war, about the best and the worst that humanity has to offer the cosmos. |
