Grumble Grumble Grumble

One of the issues that have been driving this trend is the cost of producing a Hollywood blockbuster, easily a cool one hundred million dollars or more. (In comparision, the cost of the first 'Star Wars' movie was in the neighborhood of twelve and half million dollars...) Production studios and Venture Capitalist live in fear of the next experimental disaster (e.g. 'Water World') and as a result, don't want to take the risk of funding something new and different, (such as the proposed live action EVA movie) and want to stick to the same tried and true formulas...
