Yes that's true. I don't know anyone who can come up with a real conclusion from the series ending. The End of Evangelion movie was the original ending to the series but was edited and cut to fit the time frame of a movie. Due to reasons LenMiyata mentioned. Death and Rebirth was the "lead in" to EoE. Once again editing to fit. Tiz a shame GAINAX Studios had to make all those changes.
Just leave it those "big wig" corporate sponsors to mess up something that so many people world wide hold dear. It's unfortunate that money holds all the cards, so to speak. That's just the way the corporate world works. It sucks, but there's not much the fans can do about it.
