~_~; Which is like Americans saying "Tacos" are now "hard tortillas with cheese, lettuce and ground beef inside" and then everyone going to Mexico and shouting about the inclusion of chicken or soft tortillas.

The bottom line is: it's not a distinction that even NEEDS to be made. The only reason to argue that something "isn't" anime is to exclude it from a silly imaginary club that was created largely by people who were more or less ignorant of the word's original usage.

In Japanese "pants" mean underpants.

That doesn't mean "pants" automatically = "undies" worldwide because the Japanese have chosen to embrace a linguistic mistake. If a Japanese person corrects my English or informs me that my usage of the word "pants" to refer to my trousers is wrong, I'm going to chuckle at him and think him a total asshat.
