I agree that competition drives innovation...
Would it be convenient for the gamers? Yes.
Would the companies make more money? Perhaps.

But we would be stuck with them... There would be no motivation to make better games/consoles...
Unless, as was already mentioned, EA came out with their own system! I always thought this to be a pretty decent possibility... But who knows...It could always be some unknown underdog to rise up and smush all the top dogs... O_o;;
