Though in reality, 'Son Goku' is not a pun, but a reference to the Chinese mythological tales of 'Journey to the West'/'Legend of the Monkey King'/'Saiyuki', which is the story of a Chinese Buddhist Monk, who after serious arguments about what are in the religious text, takes upon himself to journey to India, to retrieve an original copy of the Buddhist scriptures. Son Goku is the monkey king character, (notice that in Dragon Ball he starts out with a tail) and he has a staff that can expand at will. But in the original Dragon Ball, instead of a Buddhist monk questing for the Buddhist Scriptures, we have Bulma questing for the Legendary Dragon Balls. Other Anime series that reference the same legends are 'Saiyuki', (which has both a 'Son Goku' character and the staff), and the R.O.D. OVA (which features the battling Buddhist monk Genjo Sanzo, and the staff)
