It was interesting the very first time I played, but 1 hour later they were annoying. Worst addition to the game along with the random tripping.
Well, it depended on what kind of Smash Bros. player you were... if you're the kind that likes how the battle can change SIGNIFICANTLY through a single item... if you still enjoy it when even the poorly-skilled can win purely by luck... if you look forward to plain and ridiculous fun rather than a skill competition: Final Smashes are amazing.

If not, then Final Smashes can easily get on one's nerves.

But hey, at least you can turn them off... and usually you can dodge them in battle if you know how.
They're just there to spice things up.

-kinda' like the random tripping... which can totally end someone's winning streak. And sadly, you can't turn that off.

For me, at least, all the additions were great. I'm not particularly in LOVE with Final Smashes, but I do enjoy them heavily... adds a bit of panic when there's a full-on brawl. And tripping adds a humorous defeat for everyone. ...I tend to like chaos, so that doesn't bother me at all.
And hey, I like losing sometimes. As long as it was fun, I don't care at all.

But like I've said before, if you're a skill-master who hates items and such: The tripping can kill you. ...but at least it doesn't happen often. (And most skill-masters don't even run... they tend to roll or jump a alot more... running is only for when a combo is gonna' follow up... so tripping shouldn't be too bad of a problem)
