I think to fully understand the series you have to see it from beginning to end. By the end, it makes much more sense.

What I found most interesting about this particular story was the unique ways the the boundaries between right and wrong were blurred. For example, you had Light making the world a better place...by becoming "Kira" and killing criminals. Then was L whose sole mission was to bring Kira to justice...who ended up lying to and manipulating those around him in an attempt to do so.

Overall, I think Death Note is the perfect example of the saying "Power corrupts, and absolute power corrupts absolutely".
