If comedy, giatn robot, or Tenchi type situations is what you like, may I suggest Martian Successor Nadesico. It has a whiny hero that turns out to be a really good pilot though through the first few episodes he keeps saying he's only a cook. It has several really cool giant robots. It has a crazy crew for a spaceship. It has death and destruction. It has strange abilities. And it has several of the females on board the ship who are gaga over the hero. It also has Ruri, who throughout the show keeps calling everyone else idiots.
