I agree with that statement and it's true. If you've ever read up on the real life of a rapper then you would know it's a little more business than pleasure. They have to do things right, have certain things on time, and marketing has to be good or they will lose a lot of money. What people see is a 3-5 minute video showing what a rapper is doing in a yacht or a big mansion or at a party. People shouldn't assume that sums up the true life of a rapper. Even southern rappers like Ludacris and Lil' Jon a lot of have business to take care of. I can't claim southern rap is destroying what rap is, because most of the rap we enjoy has come from the south, and that includes rappers from the past and the present. Southern rap will always have it's unique style, just like west coast rappers will always have their certain style and east coast rappers will always have their own style as well. And in the midwest, there are more original and creative rappers such as Talib, Kanye West, Common, and Twista. The midwest rappers are trying to bring rap into a better light. There's no need to actually worry too much though because if certain rappers don't sell enough records then you probably won't be seeing them rap at all in the future. People who make money don't like to hire or keep people who don't make money. But to be frank, just about all rappers from any area always show off their jewelry, money, and other possessions. That trend didn't really originate in the south, but it did influence the southern rappers the most.
