This year, the postal service won't be delivering letters to Santa -- at least, not at the North Pole.

For generations, children have written breathless letters to Santa Claus in the hopes that he will fulfill their deepest desires on Christmas Day. And since 1954, the U.S. Postal Service has employed volunteers to read and respond to the letters that are addressed simply to "Santa Claus, North Pole." But no more. Citing privacy concerns, the U.S. Postal Service will no longer deliver such letters to the volunteers in North Pole, Alaska.

What would move the U.S. Postal Service to put an end to such a popular and seemingly harmless program? The answer is a registered sex offender thousands of miles away.

Last year, a postal worker in Maryland recognized a local Operation Santa Claus volunteer as a registered sex offender. The sex offender was stopped before being allowed to respond to any children's letters, but the damage was done.

As a result, new policies were put in place that prohibit volunteers from having access to the personal information of the children who write the letters. As part of the Operation Santa Claus program, the Postal Service now removes the last name and addresses of the children and replaces that information with codes that match computerized information available only to the post office. Individual post offices are allowed to decide whether or not they wish to go through all this trouble and many of them still do.

But the Alaska town of North Pole is not one of those places. According to a Postal Service spokesperson in Anchorage, the new restrictions are just not feasible in Alaska. Now, letters that are generically address to "Santa Claus, North Pole" will no longer be forwarded to the volunteers in the Alaska town of North Pole. Instead, they will be sent to other sites that are still participating in the Operation Santa program.

Despite the fact that North Pole, Alaska, isn't answering Christmas letters shouldn't stop kids from writing to Santa. Children can still send letters to Santa and receive responses through local Operation Santa programs. But those who are expecting an official "North Pole" post mark on their letters from Santa will be disappointed.

Is this good protection for kids, or just an overzealous, knee-jerk reaction? what you think about this matter

And Delta airlines came over the PA and gave a thanks to all America's Soldiers. America is so in love with the image of its idiotic Soldiers that committ atrocities such as My Lai and Wounded Knee that they thank them and care nothing for Marines or Sailors. But I'm more concerned with the ever changing field of human biology really, so let's forget the fomalities and start talking science.

If the techonology were availible today I think I'd apply for gene therapy as I'm too far gone to benefit from genetic engineering. Mainly people see screwing around with DNA (and alleles, and chromosomes, etc) as a means for people to imrpove on their bodies in mostly physical ways, or some other immoral thing. My reason for wanting to change the most basic structure of my being would be to get rid of all the nasty little hereditary monsters surfing down my double helix. Though who wouldn't want to live longer anyway?

At one point I was convinced that if God was truly real than he had intended for us to discover all the "blasphemous" technology we have, he did equip us with a curious nature and intellectual tendencies after all. Now I'm wondering if humans have wandered too far from God's radius of control and continue to move farther away; could we have overwhelmed our creator with all the fancy things we have? If God were real of course which remains one of the puzzling questions of life.

In any case:

I see genetic engineering as a means to a more peaceful life. If the science is raised to the degree of efficiency that modern medicine enjoys we could eliminate or lessen the impacts of crippling diseases which currently use the world as a plaything. However there are many downsides to every revolutionary thing that comes into the world.

Societal dynamics would shift er, melodramatically. Relantionships between the middle and upper class would maybe, MAYBE see the least changes but the lower class would suffer, unable to afford something that becomes the norm. If genetic engineering takes the left road and heads for human perfection not only in medical areas but also in physical and hereditary areas. You see, gene therapy is done after the fact but genetic engineering is done before.

That is, you engineer extra information into the regular process of reproduction; something is added to an already complete model or something is changed to yield a different result. For example: a child is in the making, its mother has the genotype Bb, the capital B represents brown eyes and the lower case b is for blue. Its father shares this same genotype. Now this child has a chance of getting either blue or brown eyes but the chance of her getting brown eyes are much higher than getting blue; dominate genes usually take presidence over recessive genes unless there are many complex genes working little by little to the same end. Also, environmental factors--and human factors as well--can influence how the genotype is represented in the phenotype.

The phenotype basically describes what a person looks like. One person's genotype may be BB, for their hair and eye color, so brown hair and brown eyes. Though this child is under the same set of rules as all other children are when picking out their genes, it can be influenced and manipulated through genetic engineering to choose something more favorable. Obviously the goal is to make handsome, magnetic offspring ipso facto the genotype would be bb, blonde hair and blue eyes. These genes will remain with the person for all their life and will be passed down to their children.

Gene Therapy modifies elements already present in the body or extracts mutant alleles and replaces them with working ones. I'm not certain if the modified DNA is hereditary :O

Obviously genetic engineering is thought of as more sinister because a doctor takes the seat God usually sits and changes the natural order of things from the process of chance, to the process of choice. They are both legitimant and useful techonologies handled under noble and correct circumstances.

I don't consider this a debate though it very well may become one.. any conversation on science period could be thought of as a debate. It's shocking to realize how many people take comfort in science when it's foundations and logics are all so unstable.

This night it would be her that was about to become a victim. The women or really girl in question was beat very viciously. And raped.

One of the men in my shop asked me what I thought about this. My response was that I don't care what happens to useless street trash that decides to be part of the problem with society. I mean the people who did the beating and raping need to be put away, for certain. But I really could not care less that on that night it was the offender that got taken to the hospital. Better them than the people I am sure she would normally go onto victimize.

As far as I am concerned when such people participate in activities and get their comeupins the folks that did it need to be put away to protect the potentially innocent people they may target later. If someone voluntarily chooses that lifestyle serves them right when their turn comes. And while citizens taking the law into there own hands is how many gangs got started so that is the down side. That is my opinion though and I would like yours.

What do you think of it when criminals fight amongst eachother, and especially the occasions where they hurt only eachother?

They then went on to tell me how offensive the movie was, and how they couldn't take watching it after awhile because of the same-sex romance sequences. It jogged my memory from a few years earlier when people I worked with went out of their way to go stop by and see some gay Korean soldiers who were sharing the same rack.

In all these situations the people who were offended went out of their way to see what they considered immoral behavior. Those two stand out as vivid examples in my mind but there are more I can think of. I think it is unreasonable for people to get offended by something they seek out. If you don't like seeing gay people make out you shouldn't rent movies that have that. If you feel there is too much violence in Television you should not watch violent television.
