The kid shown in the photo goes to my school and he wasn't one of the brighter ones. I've completely lost all respect I had for that kid and that wasn't much. To do something so vile and despicable as desecrating a graveyard on all days. This kid, once he comes back to school, is getting a rude awakening.

 Catholic Church gives D.C. ultimatum
Same-sex marriage bill, as written, called a threat to social service contracts

By Tim Craig and Michelle Boorstein
Thursday, November 12, 2009
Washington Post

The Catholic Archdiocese of Washington said Wednesday that it will be unable to continue the social service programs it runs for the District if the city doesn't change a proposed same-sex marriage law, a threat that could affect tens of thousands of people the church helps with adoption, homelessness and health care.

Under the bill, headed for a D.C. Council vote next month, religious organizations would not be required to perform or make space available for same-sex weddings. But they would have to obey city laws prohibiting discrimination against gay men and lesbians.

Fearful that they could be forced, among other things, to extend employee benefits to same-sex married couples, church officials said they would have no choice but to abandon their contracts with the city.

"If the city requires this, we can't do it," Susan Gibbs, spokeswoman for the archdiocese, said Wednesday. "The city is saying in order to provide social services, you need to be secular. For us, that's really a problem."

Several D.C. Council members said the Catholic Church is trying to erode the city's long-standing laws protecting gay men and lesbians from discrimination.

The clash escalates the dispute over the same-sex marriage proposal between the council and the archdiocese, which has generally stayed out of city politics.

Catholic Charities, the church's social services arm, is one of dozens of nonprofit organizations that partner with the District. It serves 68,000 people in the city, including the one-third of Washington's homeless people who go to city-owned shelters managed by the church. City leaders said the church is not the dominant provider of any particular social service, but the church pointed out that it supplements funding for city programs with $10 million from its own coffers.

"All of those services will be adversely impacted if the exemption language remains so narrow," Jane G. Belford, chancellor of the Washington Archdiocese, wrote to the council this week.

The church's influence seems limited. In separate interviews Wednesday, council member Mary M. Cheh (D-Ward 3) referred to the church as "somewhat childish." Another council member, David A. Catania (I-At Large), said he would rather end the city's relationship with the church than give in to its demands.

"They don't represent, in my mind, an indispensable component of our social services infrastructure," said Catania, the sponsor of the same-sex marriage bill and the chairman of the Health Committee.

The standoff appears to be among the harshest between a government and a faith-based group over the rights of same-sex couples. Advocates for same-sex couples said they could not immediately think of other places where a same-sex marriage law had set off a break with a major faith-based provider of social services.

The council is expected to pass the same-sex marriage bill next month, but the measure continues to face strong opposition from a number of groups that are pushing for a referendum on the issue.

"Lets say an individual caterer is a staunch Christian and someone wants him to do a cake with two grooms on top," said council member Yvette M. Alexander (D-Ward 6), the sponsor of the amendment. "Why can't they say, based on their religious beliefs, 'I can't do something like that'?"

After the vote, the archdiocese sent out a statement accusing the council of ignoring the right of religious freedom. Gibbs said Wednesday that without Alexander's amendment and other proposed changes, the measure has too narrow an exemption. She said religious groups that receive city funds would be required to give same-sex couples medical benefits, open adoptions to same-sex couples and rent a church hall to a support group for lesbian couples.

Peter Rosenstein of the Campaign for All D.C. Families accused the church of trying to "blackmail the city."

"The issue here is they are using public funds, and to allow people to discriminate with public money is unacceptable," Rosenstein said.

Rosenstein and other gay rights activists have strong support on the council. Council member Phil Mendelson (D-At Large), chairman of the judiciary committee, said the council "will not legislate based on threats."

"The problem with the individual exemption is anybody could discriminate based on their assertion of religious principle," Mendelson said. "There were many people back in the 1950s and '60s, during the civil rights era, that said separation of the races was ordained by God."

Catania, who said he has been the biggest supporter of Catholic Charities on the council, said he is baffled by the church's stance. From 2006 through 2008, Catania said, Catholic Charities received about $8.2 million in city contracts, as well as several hundred thousand dollars' worth this year through his committee.

"If they find living under our laws so oppressive that they can no longer take city resources, the city will have to find an alternative partner to step in to fill the shoes," Catania said. He also said Catholic Charities was involved in only six of the 102 city-sponsored adoptions last year.

Terry Lynch, head of the Downtown Cluster of Congregations, said he did not know of any other group in the city that was making such a threat.

"I've not seen any spillover into programming. That doesn't mean it couldn't happen if [the bill] passes," he said.

Cheh said she hopes the Catholic Church will reconsider its stance.

"Are they really going to harm people because they have a philosophical disagreement with us on one issue?" Cheh asked. "I hope, in the silver light of day, when this passes, because it will pass, they will not really act on this threat."

Dick move, Catholic Church, dick move.

Pulling social services (Soup kitchens, clothing drives, food banks, homeless shelters ect) this close to winter and Christmas when they would matter most, especially in some cases where it would be the difference between life and death for some people, is a horrible thing to do.

When you get down too it, the city has every right to ask the church to obey discrimination laws, since the Church is using public funds to carry out its social service programs, and discriminating against a group of the public while using those funds is illegal.

I myself don't agree with the idea of same sex marriages, and homosexuality in general, but I'm also not a closed minded idiot. Those are my personal beliefs and I keep them as such, I don't let them influence how I treat other people. In fact, its quite the opposite. Some of my best friends are gay.

It is not my place, nor is it the church's, to dictate policy or law. Both Canada and the US actually have amendments in their constitutions and bill of rights prohibiting the influence of the Church on State (government) issues.

All this is saying to me is that the Church is Blackmailing the city into getting what it wants, and that is just wrong.

I'd love to go up to the Archdiocese and ask them "If you do what you're threatening, what would Jesus say if he were here?"

I'm pretty sure they would reverse their stance on the issue.

Now, I know that Same Sex Marriage is a touchy issue, which is why I'm going to limit the debate on the issue.

We're not here to debate the existence of Same Sex Marriage, but rather to debate the actions of the Catholic church as right or wrong.

hint: Genesis 9

Edit: (see below)

1. "Be fruitful and multiply and replenish the earth."
They were to not only have children but to grow and cover the entire earth.

2."Every moving thing that liveth shall be meat for you; even as the green herb have I given you all things."
The animals are given to man to eat just like the plants are, they are not to eat just just plants (vegetarian).

3. "But flesh with the life thereof, which is the blood thereof, shall ye not eat."
No eating the life/blood of animals (dietary restriction).

4. "And surely your blood of your lives will I require; at the hand of every beast will I require it, and at the hand of man; at the hand of every man’s brother will I require the life of man. "
We will be held accountable though for all blood spilled by us whether man or beast. Don't abuse or waste what we have been given (be a good steward).

Which leads to the last one:

5. "Whoso sheddeth man’s blood, by man shall his blood be shed: for in the image of God made he man. "
Or in other words those who murder another are to be executed, period.

So how do these commandments compare with modern social morals and attitudes? Do you agree with them?

A major source of debate surrounds the controversial issue regarding the role of women in the military, particularly in units like the infantry where they are required to directly engage the enemy in combat. Although many countries actively recruit women to serve in the armed forces, only a few will allow women to fill active combatant roles. Australia does not permit women to serve in direct combat military positions, but I’m not entirely sure about other countries.

After some poking around for some updated information, the main argument against the involvement of women in these roles seems to be the physical concerns. Biologically women are not built for combat; generally denser skeletal systems make them more prone to breakages; less upper-body strength; generally smaller torsos and thus less endurance. All of these factors could prove critical on the front-line.

Many soldiers have also remarked that they could not trust a woman to carry out her duties in a situation where trusting their fellow soldier would be critical. Placing women in combat where they are at risk of being captured and tortured and possibly sexually assaulted is also unacceptable to the society at large.

Women began serving in the Israeli Defence Force combat units on an experimental basis, and the reason for removing female soldiers from the front lines was no reflection on the performance of female soldiers, but rather, that of the male infantrymen after witnessing a woman wounded. The IDF saw a complete loss of control over soldiers who experienced an uncontrollable, protective, instinctual aggression.

In recent years, having female soldiers within a combat unit has the advantage of allowing for searches on female civilians, causing less offence amongst the occupied population. Female US military personnel are specially selected to participate in patrols and raids for this purpose. However, Australian soldiers have voiced concerns saying that US soldiers "are reluctant to take women on reconnaissance or special operations, as they fear that in the case of combat or discovery, their priority will be to save the women and not to complete the mission. Thus while men might be able to be programmed to kill, it is not as easy to program men to neglect women."

While the majority of people are against women serving in active combat roles, a minority believe that if a woman can satisfy the physical requirements and dutifully complete all set tasks, then she should be allowed to serve as men do.

These are all very valid arguments. Personally I believe that everyone should be given a choice. Some women do have the capabilities to serve in active combat roles like men do, and thus should be allowed if they can satisfy the same requirements that men do. However, I believe that the majority of women are just not cut out for this type of work. Heck, even men are not cut out for it sometimes. There are some places that I just wouldn’t venture into, and this is definitely one of them.

Many of you have heard that a local offical refused to wed an interracial couple. This case is so controversial on many levels. First the official claims to not be racist, as many who disagree with interracial couples say they are not. Further more most people in that situation would have just married them anyways.

Many angry man wouldn't marry interracial couple - Yahoo! News

Having found out the hard way that many of the people I held dear disagree with interethnic relations this case tears me. I think that the official is close minded and certainly has problems but he takes a clear stance and refuses to be a hypocrite. Speaking from someone who was in that situation people who make it known that they are against interracial couples seem only a bit better than friends who just refuse to talk to you because you dated an asian woman, even though you lived in Japan which is 99 percent Asian. Somehow even though it is ccovert hatred it is more intense.

The offical must be punished somehow and they will probably be removed from their office, which is only fitting. But you know for ever person who admits they are against this sort of thing there are ten more wh owill not say it.

But it does allow us an oppurtunitiy for some open discussion. What do you think of interrace relations, marriage, and what should become of the official. Sound Off.

Some of you have probably already heard about the beating of jack Price. A man viciously pounded for no other reason than being gay.the injuries are numersous. Broken jaw, fractured ribs, a lacerated spleen, and the "collapse of both of his lungs." My prayers are with him. I was going to post a link to it but it shows the video which is too aweful in my opinion, I mean this is severe damage.

While I find this to be intolerable clearly such behavior is not unthinkable to a great many people for this has happened many times, sometimes it gets national coverage sometimes not. And if many would do it how many more think of it?

This is not the only type of time a crime against someones creed, or whatever aspect of there behavior that has no measurable value, has occured. They happen for religion for color, for sexuality, you name it. Certainly we all have an inherent right to defend ourselves, and our family, some may go as far to say our property. After all if one tries to steal your wallet and he gets a good beating for it most don't raise a brow. But we are talking about something that has no quantifiable value, sexuality.

I do not believe that anyones beliefs give you the right to take hostile action on that person, as long as those beliefs don't infringe on your personal rights. While there is gray area on what infringes on your rights and what doesn't there is far less gray area on what in reasonable to justify violence. Few gay people in history have ever infringed on a mans or womans right to be heterosexual, much like no religion has infringed on my right to be Christian. Now true there is rape, but that is the product of a disturbed mind, in most cases nothing to do with sexuality.

But tell us your honest opinion. When or do you ever feel some belief warrant hostile action.
