It's like a more fancy and Victorian style anime. It's mainly about a women (the people address her as a male for some reason) who tries to free people from the tyranny of an unjust empire with her army of rouges called the People's Army, but ends up in failure and ventures with a new crew that consists of pirates and marauders. It seems cool so far, only watched two episodes so far. Anyone else watch it?

I am trying to find out whether Miyazaki and Ghibli has effected western attitude towards anime and whether or not he deserves the credits he is given.

So I am asking you the great anime public whether or not you feel like Ghibli and Hayao himself were major influence's on your relationship with anime.

Or if you were already a champion of japanese animation before Spirited Away came out in the west whether you feel attitudes towards you and your hobby has been changed. Basically whether you feel animation has become more of an accepted art in the west.

Also, why do you think Ghibli above others are so mainstreamly succseful were so many others fail to get consistant and wide ranging coverage and (bottom line) sales.

Finally, I am asking whether or not you feel as if Spirited Away deserved an Academy award when it recieved it in 2003.


(I realise there is other Ghibli films both before and after Spirited Away, some better some worse, its just that in my own personal opinion perception changed from around about when it got the plaudits and recognition. Also i am aware that there is a thread about general 'first time' to anime but this is specifically about Miyazaki and Ghibli, however if you feel I am completely wrong about the idea then please feel free to tell me where and when you think i went wrong. I must also mention I may use any responses in this thread in my initial research reading lists. Obviously its only my university that will see it and it is only academically viewed it is never comercially used in any way and i won't profit from this, apart from maybe having a richer research portfolio)

It is a great anime but there seems to be much more assumption and thought than there is action. (even though, ironically, it's about death) It seems that anime that have little to no comic relief or any childish anime cliche are the most assuming and thought-driven.

I'm so excited to see that they're continuing the story of Fullmetal Alchemist from where the anime broke with the manga (at least, that's my understanding of what FMA: Brotherhood is all about) and I'm thinking: wow! That would be fricking fantastic to do with Kenshin! The manga had a much more satisfying ending and a better plotline.

Pretty please someone in the know tell me that something new with Kenshin is going to happen soon or is already happening in Japan...!

So what would top your list of "Anime to bring back" and why?

For me I have two.

The first is Rurouni Kenshin. The anime does have a pretty good ending as far as the last episode goes, but they never got to animate the third and final arc of the manga and I would love to see that happen. It is a really great story, but due to horrible ratings for the filler season of the anime it was never made. A real bummer. BTW anyone who never has read the manga really should pick up at least the last arc if you are a Kenshin fan. Totally worth it.

The second would be Nagasarete Airantou. While it is not an amazing series by any means, I just really really enjoyed it. A bunch of great characters and loads of potential, but the series just ends without any closure what so ever. The manga is still on going so there is plenty of material for it. Sadly I do not thing the series was all that popular so the chances of another season are probably nil.

I would add Hayate no Gotuku as well, but I am pretty sure there will be another season of this at some point, just has not been announced yet since the last one just ended.
