What is a render?

Whats a render first of all im confused sombody help me out.

I moved this post to it's own topic as I felt it was needed.

EXAMPLE:
Original Image

Rendered Image (I added about an inch to the middle of the scan, fixed the hair and removed the text...but that isn't what a render is, it is the cutting out of the character from the back ground)
