Overview

The story of Full Metal Panic! revolves around Sousuke Sagara, a professional soldier in the mercenary group called Mithril. He is hired to act as a bodyguard for Kaname Chidori, a spunky high school student who actually has more to herself than meets the eye. Sousuke is told only to protect Kaname from abduction and that the hostile group remains unknown up to date. So, as part of his job, Sousuke enters high school with Kaname and is immediately plunged into a world that’s so different to his own that it’s almost impossible for him to cope.

Sousuke's upbringing is highly unlike Kaname’s, so they disagree on a lot of things. Sousuke also doesn’t understand the mechanics of high school, so he tends to over-react to simple situations, thus, igniting Kaname’s temper. However, it does not take long for Kaname to acknowledge Sousuke's determination to protect her, and they, therefore, slip into a comfortable friendship.

All is well until the day that the plane that Kaname was riding on got hijacked by a terrorist group. Now, their roles are reversed, and it is Kaname who finds herself in an unfamiliar world. As events unravel, she finds out that she actually plays a key role in the intrigue between Mithril and its flagship, Tuatha de Danaan. Later on, she realizes her feelings for Sousuke but is caught in a love triangle between her, Sousuke, and Teletha – the captain of the submarine. Now, they must face the dangers around them as well as deal with their blossoming emotions.

Major Characters:

Sousuke Sagara: Sousuke is a 17-year-old sergeant in the counterterrorist force called Mithril. He is strict, efficient and aloof. He’s the perfect soldier, but he fails as a normal teenager. Indeed, these qualities make him quite clueless when it comes to blending into the setting of a normal high school. And more often than not, these qualities only lead him into awkward situations wherein he overreacts, thereby, angering his ward.

Kaname Chidori: Kaname, at first glance, appears to be your average 16 year old. She’s spunky, she’s smart, and she has a fierce temper. Indeed, sometimes Sousuke has to suffer the brunt of her rage whenever he does something she considers wrong. But Kaname is no normal teenager. She actually has an inherent power that gives her the knowledge of advanced math and science. She just ‘knows’ these things and doesn’t necessarily understand them. Because of her powers, she is pursued by terrorist groups so that they can use her to construct advanced weapons.

Telethat Testarossa: Tessa, for all her clumsiness, is actually a child prodigy at math and science. She, like Kaname, is a 'whispered.'
