Anime is the Japanese word for animation.
ANY animation.
Walt Disney, Tom and Jerry, Looney Tunes, Powerpuff Girls: all anime.
Sorry to break it to y'all.
technically avatar being a domestic cartoon not japanese does not fit the anime reqs! also its lack of and chibi part also contributes... but to me its as much as an anime as anyother. in the words of some guy i dont know but read on wiki (too lazy to link) "Avatar blurs the line between anime and normal cartoons so much that it gets to point where it doesn't even matter"
lets have ur thoughts
Love only if you are willing to hate.

Grumble Grumble Grumble
This of course is the Japanese usage of this term... The American usage is somewhat different...
Definition of anime - Merriam-Webster Online Dictionary:: a style of animation originating in Japan that is characterized by stark colorful graphics depicting vibrant characters in action-filled plots often with fantastic or futuristic themes
But since no one can agree on a singular usage of a fairly new loanword (most dictionaries still don't even include it), nor can we assume that everyone on this messageboard is American: it would seem to make sense not to exclude anything on the basis of rules that were made up by American fans themselves.
Though the linked definition wouldn't exclude Avatar either since it's defined only as "a style" "originating in Japan".

But this entry does...
Anime - Wikipedia, the free encyclopediaOutside Japan, the term most popularly refers to animation originating in Japan. To the West, not all animation is considered anime; anime is considered a subset of animation.
Well according to wikipedia 'In Japan, the term does not specify an animation's nation of origin or style; instead, it is used as a blanket term to refer to all forms of animation from around the world" however in English dictionaries define anime as "a Japanese style of motion-picture animation.
So in other words Americans are the one defining if is anime or not.
~_~; Which is like Americans saying "Tacos" are now "hard tortillas with cheese, lettuce and ground beef inside" and then everyone going to Mexico and shouting about the inclusion of chicken or soft tortillas.
The bottom line is: it's not a distinction that even NEEDS to be made. The only reason to argue that something "isn't" anime is to exclude it from a silly imaginary club that was created largely by people who were more or less ignorant of the word's original usage.
In Japanese "pants" mean underpants.
That doesn't mean "pants" automatically = "undies" worldwide because the Japanese have chosen to embrace a linguistic mistake. If a Japanese person corrects my English or informs me that my usage of the word "pants" to refer to my trousers is wrong, I'm going to chuckle at him and think him a total asshat.
