The bottom line is: it's not a distinction that even NEEDS to be made. The only reason to argue that something "isn't" anime is to exclude it from a silly imaginary club that was created largely by people who were more or less ignorant of the word's original usage.

In Japanese "pants" mean underpants.

That doesn't mean "pants" automatically = "undies" worldwide because the Japanese have chosen to embrace a linguistic mistake. If a Japanese person corrects my English or informs me that my usage of the word "pants" to refer to my trousers is wrong, I'm going to chuckle at him and think him a total asshat.

That is That is exactly the way I feel. Who are we to decide if it is or if is not
…. Anyways before I came to the States I never saw a hard taco shell in my life and what’s up with people putting sour cream in tacos.

Don’t get me wrong sour cream is good especially in tostadas but come on. It would be like me putting mustard in Sushi.

Oh come now, both wasabi and hot mustard are common condiments for sushi, with many of the cheaper brands of wasabi just being flavored hot mustard...

Were drifting too far from the main topic folks, time to get back on track...

Re: Avatar technically not anime!

anime is the French word for animate or animation which encompasses both the japanese style and american style. While I see both Tsu and Len's points I will have to say that trying to be "technically" correct is dumb in this sense as the definition (much like that of Ecchi or Otaku) varies from region to region.

Re: Avatar technically not anime!

Like Mr. Miyata quoted, I only apply it to animation which originated in Japan.
When you talk about anime you're talking about the Japanese stuff. It's handy to differentiate.
