Overview

Avatar: The Last Airbender takes place in a world where humans have the ability to "bend" or manipulate one of following four elements; water, fire, earth, and air. There are four nations grouped by benders of these elements. Over a hundred years ago a war began between the Fire Nation and the rest of the kingdoms, and is still going on at the beginning of this show.

The show revolves around a 12 year old boy named Aang, who is an airbender and the current Avatar. The Avatar is a person who can master all four of the elements, and is reincarnated when he or she dies. Aang, who was frozen in an iceberg for the 100 years, is awoken from his slumber by two kids from the Southern Water Tribe, named Katara and Sokka. They decide to go with Aang on his journey to help him master the 4 elements in order to one day defeat the Fire Nation.

Aang is expected to bring order back to the entire world, yet he is still just a kid. Throughout the show you see him transform as he trains and matures through various experiences. Along the way he makes plenty of friends and allies who help him progress throughout the story. Meanwhile, the Fire Nation sends wave after wave of new enemies to capture and stop him, seeing as how they consider him to be the only threat that can stop them from total domination.

Major Characters:

Aang is a 12 year old boy who was told he was the avatar. After running away from the temple, he was caught in a storm and frozen in an iceberg. After a hundred year slumber, he is awoken and told there has been a war raging while he was asleep. Now, determined to put a stop to the war, he travels with his friends to master all four elements to become strong enough to face the Fire Lord.

Katara is a waterbender from the Southern Water Tribe. She goes with Aang and her brother in the beginning of his journey to help him master the elements, while at the same time trying to become a master of waterbending herself.

Sokka is a warrior from the Southern Water Tribe and is katara’s brother. He helped discover Aang and accompanies him on his journey in order to fight the Fire Nation to bring peace to the world.

Toph enters the story during the second season. She is a 12 year old blind earth bender, and is a part of a wealthy family in the Earth Kingdom. This helps to explain how she comes off as stubborn and arrogant at times. Because she is blind, she sees with earth bending by feeling the vibrations on the ground. She decides to run away from home and accompany Aang in order to teach him earth bending.

Zuko is the first antagonist of the series. He was a banished prince of the Fire Nation who was told he could only return if he captured the Avatar. So, along with his uncle, he chases Aang and his friends throughout the series.

Azula is prince Zuko’s sister. She was sent by her father to capture her brother and uncle for their betrayal and failure at the siege of the Northern Water Tribe. She is accompanied by her two friends Mai and Ty Lee .

Iroh is the uncle of Zuko and Azula. He was originally intended to become the next Fire Lord, but was replaced by his brother after the previous Fire Lord died. He travels with Zuko in the beginning in order to try to capture the Avatar. He takes the role of a mentor for the younger cast, and does very little fighting in the show, so far.
