dude. im pretty shure lightning can burn clear through a person and most things behind it in way way less than 10 sec. more like 1-2.

all it takes for the lightning to kill you is the disruption of your heartbeat and synaptics. the burning flesh and smoldering ashes are a side-effect.

as for the comet itself, its just something they creators thought would be cool to have and put it in there. thats all there is to it.

another thing you may forget, or just may not know, is that for centuries, and moreso in times long past, comets where signs of strength and military prowes. they may have put this in the show to seve to make them seem even more of a juggernaught.

i think that they put the comet as a way to represent a MAJOR boost to their power for its rarety and it's sheer size. i mean in the anime it quite clear that this is no small comet. and in the argument that lighting is just as powerful you also have to take into account that a lightning bolt can only hit one thing at a time. where a comet acts like a bomb and depending on it's size can clear out several acres of land.
