Completely different direction on how things are unfolding. They're taking the whole series, and re-doing everything from the ground up in 4 movies.
The biggest change I love the best is the new take on the relationships between characters, especially between Rei and Shinji.
EVA 1.0 is out on DVD, I strongly suggest giving it a shot.
