You need to be an active member at AO and have 500 posts.

You can earn points by either postings on the threads or by winning championships at the arcade center.

An admin has to approve you too. You must also be a good poster and follow the rules.

Having 500 posts only makes you eligible for 'Elite' status, it's not automatic... Have you PM a Admin asking for the upgrade???
