These really aren't all that practical, wouldn't you say? They are more like add ons now that i read up on them.

You think the site would run a bit more smoothly, considering page load times, if we just scrapped them?

Most likely. I've seen a lot of forums which have a system like this to encourage people to create more posts (Obviously without spamming!)
