Chief, the fact that you used PNG as the file format is the reason it's such a large file size, PNG doesn't use that much compression, had you used JPG you would have gotten the same color quality and a smaller file size.

Attached is your sig saved as JPG, and it's only 36kb

True if people used JPEG more than PNG it would be easier, even thou I prefer PNG the difference in quality if you switched from PNG to JPEG is really nothing...

I think the lowest setting for a JPEG you can drop it to without much loss in quality is 40% and the file will be extremely small vs a PNG.

Maybe there should be a rule that only a certain type of user group can use a say PNG file as their sig vs a Community Member who has to stick with just a JPEG but can ask the Sig Request Thread team to switch the formats if necessary because switching the file type isn't much a hassle for me even if it was in the 1000s lol... thank god PS made a batch command :P

That would solve the need for a bigger file size since most members won't be using a large size... right? Then we can have a limit on how big the sig can be and it won't effect the loading time.

    THE RULES!

I'm on my grind in search to find whats on my mind, its one of a kind!

    Re: Signature Size

Well it also depends on the type of signature you make and if it needs the png so that some of the signature doesn't turn out black.

    EX:

Needs to be a png to look right.

    Edit:

This is it in a jpeg file.

Not quite...well I guess that depends on how you look at it, .png uses "lossless" compression and this actually is "more" compression then .jpg uses in its lossy format. In order to store something in a lossless format the algorithms store how to reconstruct the file to it's original state within the file so as IF there was need to edit the file later you could do so without the file being littered with artifacts. Thus the file has to be compressed to a greater extent as it is storing more data and in order to keep the file size manageable. Now don't get me wrong, the lossy compression shrinks the image to a greater (meaning smaller) compressed state. I was just saying that the lossless is compressing more data.

The reason a .jpg is smaller is because it doesn't store that information and thus it is "one shot deal"

Now this is only to a SMALL extent with the trivial size (dimensions) we are talking about. If it was a wallpaper then yes you may be bigger gaps.

If I take my original .psd and save it as a .jpg with the highest quality setting (12) then it is actually 94.3 KB in size. That isn't much different then the 121 KB .png.

The reason you got the file so small is because you took a compressed file and striped the reconstruction data as well it reduced the quality (even if you didn't tell it to) when you re-saved it. From the original I would have to lower the quality to about a 7 to get that small a size.

    .jpg @ 12 quality = 94.3 KB

    .jpg @ 7 quality = 35.7 KB

    The one you posted

Also it is hard to tell with such a small image (dimensions) but the quality is much less in the second 2 then the higher quality .jpg

Ky-lyrra if you got the color of the bg from AO and put it into that sig it would be the same looking as if it were a transparent and you could keep the PSD if you ever did want to make a PNG :/

Yeah, but the point is with the naked eye you cant tell. Unless your zoom in that is.
