Anime Was Banned

My evil step dad for no reason just told me that I am no longer allowed to watch anime or allowed to learn about Japan's culture and I'm also no longer allowed to learn the languege. so I need a little help. do you think I should give it up or continue to learn about their awesomeness?

O.o gosh.. why suddenly he said that.. i think it's good if you want to learn something you like.. it might be of good use in the future... gee... it's unreasonable to say something like that to children who are in passion for something... it's like stopping their dreams... Instead... they should incourage their passion, not say ban them and such... sheesh...

Well.. if i were you i might try to get support from my mom... if not teachers... at first try to reason with them.. what you are doing is just a hobby.. it's nothing bad unless it's done excessively... Lol ^^ don't over do it ok

Heck.. my mum is proud im able to learn japanese just by watching anime.. they should be proud if you have the will and wants to learn something... -.- i think this is absurd... it don't make sence at all...could you tell us why he says so? Maybe we can understand more and maybe help you even further ^^

Well, he says its bad for my mind... I... the only anime I would watch is Death Note and Bleach. I was getting into some other ones but I wan't a huge fan. I dunno why he's like that. to be honest, he doesn't like me enjoying things that he thinks are stupid. even if it's for my education. and I tried talking to my mom but she says she doesn't want to be in the middle of it all. so, I'm in a horribal situation.

*clears throat* Nothing is stupid i would say... heck... even when you watch porns for example.. there is still something good out of it... why not animes? Hmm... if he thinks that is stupid... you just have to show the benefits out of watching them then... the simplest.. but quite hard to accomplish.... i must say..

I don't think animes are bad for your mind unless if it's watched excessively.. and i don't think you do.. ^^ are you...watching them excessively? Well.. if you can't get the first suggestion done.. the only thing you could do.. is try to lay low and watch sometimes only.. ^^ Like.. once a week or 2... perhaps? ^^ Maybe other members have better ideas... but i hope i helped..

uh I only watch them exssesivly if watching twice a week is classified as such. no, I focus more on my schoolwork and keeping up with my friends. I am also home schooled so that doesn't help at all seeing as everyone I know belongs to a anime club a their school. besides, my step dad thinks that everyone sucks except for white people. I dissagree but that's his thing... but yeah, I'll try that. thank you so much.

Oh my, that is quite the horrible little situation there. Personally in my case my dad finds anime foolish and the whole Japanese culture interest to be a bit freaky....being 18 and purchasing my anime/manga with my own money makes him unable to say too much.
He is quite supportive when he wants to be also. So I guess it works out for me somehow.

Ummmm, well lets see. Is your dad one for negotiating? Perhaps strike up some sort of deal to watch anime only at certain times. I know that has been what you have been doing...but does he know that?

How can anime can be bad, you can actually learn stuff off them as some seires are based on actual events, dates and characters so anime aint bad. Culture of the jap are ok if you like it, cant be that bad, how can learning a second language be that bad, its just a second language

Wow, that's a jerk move on your fathers part. How can learning about another culture be bad? Ignorance = good? In that case 12>148?!

Well, if you want to give up, go ahead and throw in the towell, but if you want to still learn and watch it...the interwebs is you best friend. Or go to a friends house and watch it, use the interwebs, etc, etc. Don't forget, the interwebs and friends are tools for you to use! =D

Did you know we have the same birthday? Which means you are turning 16?

I am going to give you some advice that might not go over to well with some people. Do as he says, respectfully. Whether you like it or not he is your "father" and has the right to make that decision while you live in his home. If all you have been watching is Death Note and Bleach it is easy to see how he might think that way. Arguing with him won't help your case and may make it worse. If you show respect for his decision then later he will be more open to trying again with anime that you know wouldn't be offensive to his values. If you sneak around his back however you risk making his alienation of anime permanent by it's association to your actions.

Now the key to that is "while you live in his home". When you go to college you can take Japanese for your language credit and join an anime club. Being home schooled that may come sooner rather then later. The people I knew who home schooled started college between 16-17 instead of 18. When were you planning on going?

As Arrianna said, do as he says respectfully but it wouldnt hurt to ask why he doesnt want you to watch it. Theres no harm in asking if its just to see where he is comming from. If he says its just stupid then that in its self is a stupid respons and reason but again fallow your step dads wishes respectfully and as soon as you move out you can do as you wish.

Forgive me for asking but, your white right?, if anyway case, I guess everybody has a right to learn what they like best. So pretty much that choice is yours to make my friend, if somebody wants to learn about japanese culture and it ain't their culture, then I would have to guess its nice to know another culture, but your father banning you from this? wow that is harsh. I don't think thats good parenting, so its your choice man. give it up, or continue learning something you want to know about.
