Besides the obvious oxygen thing, which is probably a non-issue, deforestaton causes other things like erosion and desertification. Cut down the trees in some areas, and say bye bye to organisms living there. Good soil? It will be leeched like a torrent. Luckily, I think we are starting to see more industries that cut down trees, than wait a couple of years while planting new ones, then continue on. It's the fact that some people constantly do it without giving anything a chance to grow back is the problem, I think. |

| Banned | Re: the big effect You make it sound as if it's not having a big effect already, because it is having a big effect right now as i'm typing! Humans are so greedy they overuse their surrondings and push them to the limits untill eventually they will run out and then what will we all do? Ifwe recycle paper it isn't as bad but still some pieces of paper are wasted, also cantsenditback's point is very good, animal shelter...Their homes are being torn down every 5 minutes and trees supply oxgeon, without them we wouldn't be hear all this time because they feed off our carbon dioxide we produce when we breath and in return they supply us with oxygeon. You may think, oh i don't care it will happen in over 200years time i wont be their to see it so i'm not bothered live my life to the full whilst i can. This is so wrong as i used to think this but then i rembered, what about my kids and their kids what sort of life will they have? So please recycle bottles, paper or anyhting else that you can get your hands on because your saving human kind and your children and family. We are pretty pathetic and we could do a lot better putting more effort into our work... |

The earth's ecosystem is too robust for us to do any permanent damage, not to mention the earth as a way of adapting to and fixing what ever we throw at her. Take this for example: You drive into the woods and plant a tree. It will take 50 years for that one tree to counteract the emissions you put into the air by just driving there in the first place.

It got down to almost -45C (-49F), and were I live, we get the Santa Ana winds from California and Mexico coming up and over the Rockies which keeps our temperatures pretty mild in the winter, regardless of "global warming"

but ecosystems being robust is something i'll agree with you. since most natural ecosystem have to power to remove most toxins and create a livable atmosphere there are a lot more robust than most ppl think. though, there are always exceptions and most of the ecosystem processes takes a lot of time. though... if u disrupt the ecosystem and ruin the environment. i think that's when the problems start to arise. in which case companies have played a major part with and not just with deforestation but with mining and oil drilling (thats a big one). both of these act not just disfigure the environment by polluting and destroying the vegetation and can lead to disruptions in the ecosystem from the interaction of the release toxins. but i'll admit most companies these days have started to clean up there act and have employed more environmental friendly approach.

![]() ![]() Credits: 37,265 | Re: the big effect There's evidence in fossil record that our planet regularly goes through radical temperature changes every several hundred Millennia. The idea that humans, who have only graced the face of the planet for almost 7000 years (recorded history), are the direct cause of "global warming" is, quite frankly, utter poppycock. We are too small and insignificant on the global scale to have that kind of effect on the planet as a whole, small portions like a city area, yes, and even then the planet can repair itself, but not the whole bloody planet. Al Gore's an idiot, you should stop listening to him.
