Car Tips

Who here drives a car AND takes care of it themselves?? Meaning stuff like cleaning the car to minor maintenances. I don't think there's a thread like this previously so here it is. Especially now my car is in its third year of existence slowly I will see more issues.

So if anyone have any tips about anything car related throw it in.

Most important of all: Anyone know how to clean the inside part of the windshield?? Can't seem to get it new-car clear no matter what. I have tried damp towel, window cleaner fluid, etc with no luck. You make a small smudge and it stays for the rest of your life.

The trick for cleaning that window is to use clean dry NEWSPAPER!!. The first thing is to sue lots and lots of window cleaning solution to DISSOLVE that oily films, then BEFORE IT DRIES, absorb the window cleaner with that dry newspaper. Trying the swab up the fluid as it dries only smears the oil back onto the window...

Re: Car Tips

I've have good experience using Armorall cleaners on the inside of my car, as well as using simple windex.

I got my car used, first thing I did was take windex and paper towel to the inside of the glass, and it worked perfectly.

Re: Car Tips

If your car is having problems starting, and the battery is still good, try putting oil additive into the engine. I f the car isn't too old or have too many miles it should work.

Re: Car Tips

Depending on what you mean by minor maintenance, you should get a good service manual. With shop rates around $65-$70 an hour, and my not being made of money, I do just about everything on my car myself. A good manual is one of the first things I always buy. And find a parts store with some people who know what there're doing. They're getting really hard to find these days.

Re: Car Tips

Smoking in your car doesn't help the windshield either. I've got a friend who smokes in his car so much, the window is tinted this weird yellowish-tan color. I don't know if you smoke or not, Legend, but I thought I'd throw that out there.

agreed. i dont have a problem with smoking at all (in fact, all this recent anti-smoking crusade is grinding my gears, but thats another story)

however, i think it is a bad idea to smoke in one's car. not only does it effect the windsheild, as A_S mentioned, but the smell can embed itself in the upholstry. this can DRASTICALLY reduce the selling price, especially to a person who is an aforementioned crusader.

and cigarette burns suck

Well minor maintence in my book would be range from cleaning the car to changing the tires?? Anything that you can maintain the car with general tools you have in the garage would be minor in my opinion. Oil Change, changing air filter, spark plugs, etc.

Cigarette burns do suck, epsecially when you're the one getting yelled at for it, LOL. I smoke all super careful when I'm in my friend's car, because she just got it a few months back and she says, "If you burn my upholstry, I'll kill you!" LMAO. My ex-girlfriend's grandma used to nag her about letting me smoke in her car (it wasn't even her grandmother's place to say anything about it... damn crusader!), saying things like, "Your car is gonna stink and blah, blah, blah."

Never go to a Valvoline Instant Oil Change center. I used to work there and they'll try to sell you the most ridiculous crap. And they always try to push people to use this synthetic oil, which makes the price of your oil change rise by about $40. I remember one time, this cat pulls in and I'm tryin' to greet him and he says, "Don't sell me sh*t! Just change my god-damn oil!"

Good tip good tip, I just don't go to a dealer to get my oil changed is because I'm afraid of them using some used filters...
