    Re: Cultural Sensitivity

Well for someone else from a different country and place, I see that it may be hard fomr them to understand the horrors brought by those kinds of things. Like say a mass murder occured in....lets say Cuba or something, of course we may say "Aww, so sad" or whatever, but people there living, its a much bigger thing. Im not saying it all good and jolly that its this way but it is. Theres not the much unity between people of the world internationaly

    Re: Cultural Sensitivity

We could never travel into someone's brain and see life from their perspective that's why even in an anime if it's told from the primary antogonists point of veiw we feel sad when they feel sad because through some minor connection we feel a part of them, we understand them, it's almost as if we are that person or they are a mirror of us.

So maybe that kid drew that hurtful thing to remind himself why it is useless to hate because if you display your hatred many innocent people fall victim to it.

On the other hand maybe one day he wants to cause that destruction because all he's found is hatred and it has made him numb. It's hard to tell unless you ask the person but that's the way the world works I mean think about Naruto everytime we find a new enemy their story is always told so we understand them. We understand why they want to fight!

    Re: Cultural Sensitivity

Well since I'm not culturally sensitive to anything I don't know if my impression of this counts but I'll try anyway.
From little kids I wouldn't try to expect too much tact in these regards but it's necessary to educate them in such a way that they gradually learn about traumas like that.

E.g. You should have a conversation with that kid or the whole class about the effects those drawings can have on certain people. Make connections to atomic bombs, holocaust, forced prostitution, etc. as well. They might be a little young for all that of course. Oh well.

The only real thing you can do to help humanity as a whole progress is to start with the kids. Lets face it, its easier to change some ones mind while they are younger then when they are older. To better our selves, to pull all of us out of this sespool of ignorance and lack of commen sense of a world we live in today is by teaching and better explaining to kids on whats going on.
Ex: Like the kid who drew the twin towers being hit by the plains. The best approuch to that before it becomes something negitive is to simply pull him off to the side and ask him about it. If he doesnt know then try to explain it to him in a way a little kid would understand that what happened on that day was very very bad. Ordenary people just like him, his friends, and family and that they were just going about their day and were killed by really really bad people. And that those people who died will never be seen again. Their family are very sad that they will never see their friends and family again. And then ask him how that would make him feel if it happened to him.
Remind you your talking to little kids so be very gentle about it.

I live in California and live with 2 younger brothers. When I found out what happened on 911 I was devistated and greaved. Even to this day I cant watch any videos of what happened on that day with out my heart feeling like it was just ripped out of my chest.

Ahh....I remember the school back in Russia....now that was a school that still gives me nightmares......if i did that and the teacher saw me......I do not even want to go int the detail on what would have happened to me.........either we were trained to be nuclear geniuses or military leaders.....those were the only two choices......but a lot has changed since then....
I still remember when i went to fourth grade and I was new and the surrounding of the school totally boggled my mind....teachers were actually nice and did not have a military uniform on and you could speak your own opinion without fearing for your future life....
To me...school here are like a heaven compared to the schools in other countries.....and some countries do not even have schools.....and even though right now I am in college and it may seem to other people that some professors are way to strict or mean...I always smile at that an try to imagine them being schooled in other countries.....
DO NOT MAKE ME UNLEASH MY INNER DEMON

You have no idea how much I agree with you. Students here have no idea what its like out there in other parts of the word. I respects all of my teachers I had even though I did not do well in school but I worked my rear off. Only a few teachers I didnt respect simply because they went out of their way to be mean to us and disrespect me. I hold teachers with lots of respect. And any one who complains about their life and act all braty and trash talk the US or what ever. I say go live some where else some where in the world for a few years and then come back and try to cry about why you hate this that or what ever.

    Re: Cultural Sensitivity

Many children are insensitive to cultural differences and most of it is due to ignorance. A lot of them have probably have heard only one side of the story. I know when I was in elementary school and middle school the only side I ever heard was the American side. I didn’t really know the sort of issues the other cultures might be going through and how they might have been effected by the actions of my own country. I don’t know how it is in Japan but I know most of the classes I have attended they try to make the Americans seem like the good guys in every situation which is not case.

I have been lucky in having two teachers in my life that really opened my mind. They talked about the issues in today’s society and talked about things that some are not comfortable talking about (religion for example). They helped me get insight into different cultures and helped me not only understand the differences but the similarities as well. Sometimes we focus so much on trying to make out that our country, culture, or race is somehow special that we seem to lose sight that in the end we are all human.

So my advice to you is to talk to your students. Share with them some of the experiences you may have had when it comes to cultural difference and stress the importance of being able to accept people of other cultures. Help them understand just how much an event such as 9-11, the holocaust, or any sort of similar event effects a culture. I hope this helps!
