Yes it does, but it really depends on what book you're reading. Of course you also need a dictionary to help you on words you don't understand when you're reading.

Because that is the point. You learn to apply words correctly by reading and hearing them used correctly. There are alot of books these days that do not do that. The classics however are much more likely to give you what you need. What you expose yourself to will influence how you think and eventually speak.

My own speech has improved measurably since I began reading more classical liturature. I'm not talking about Shakespeare. More Dickens time and up.

I think reading does help broaden a person's vocabulary, depending on how often he reads and what material he reads. By reading a lot, the mind subconsciously gets used to the words and language, and thereby widen a person's vocabulary range and sentence structure. With speech skills, however, that is a different thing. For a person to acquire good speech skills, it requires not only good vocabulary and reading; it requires practice. Good speech skills is not something you can adapt from just sitting around and reading books - you have to pratice the usage of words and apply it to speech, or more precisely, practice mind and oral coordination, which is an important factor in speech. Having a wide vocabulary range does help, but that alone is insufficient.

I tend to agree with those that say it does. There are times when I learn words from reading a lot. Plus in school they make you do it, so there must really be a benefit to it.

Now on the other hand, I think that reading excessively and not doing anything else ever isn't exactly good either. I think it can cloud your mind.
