I think it does kind of depend on what book you are reading. Its pointless trying to read a childrens book to help increase your vobaulary. (just stating the obvious)

But i suppose its ok if you learn new words after reading challenging books and try to use them as much as you can during the day to get used to using it.

Otherwise for me i found it easier to learn from others, i am not really much of a book worm. I just look up words in the dictionary and search in the Theasurus.

Reading will benefit you more than if you don't read at all, but in terms of improving your vocabulary, I think it really depends on who it is. For example - I have a friend who's read a lot of books (and I mean, a lot!), yet her English isn't all that good. It's more of a "goes in one ear and out the other" thing. I have another friend who reads a lot of books, and her English is superb in almost every aspect. Both of these friends were born in Australia, so it has nothing to do with learning English as a second language and such.

Personally, I think reading a lot of books will improve your vocabulary, but not so much your speech, as this has to do with practice, practice, and more practice - reading out loud can improve your speech though. It also depends on what books you read - you can't stick to children's books for the rest of your life. That'll get you no where.

It would improve your writing skills. You will take in the writing style of the books you have read. At the same time improving your grammar. Yea, thats all Im gonna type without repeating what others have posted.

Re: Does reading alot really improve your vocabulary and speech skills?

Reading may or may not improve your speech or volcabulary, it depends on the type of books you read. I mean, reading a book on ants for example, isn't really going to improve your speech. On the other hand, if you read like a scientific book it may or may not help with the volcabulary, it all depends on the person's intake of knowledge and facts.
Speech is improved by practising and saying things more. I don't think any book is going to help with that.

Re: Does reading alot really improve your vocabulary and speech skills?

just reading any old book wont necessarily help your vocab. but reading a VERY old book will or you wont' understnad it, my brother is finally being made to read Lord of the Rings so he is haveing to expand his vocab beyond:
    yo
    wassup
    Pc

and he can't even SPELL those right. i have been reading all kinds of books all my life and my vocabulary leaves my english teacher goin WTF did that mean again?

thanks to zyta for the sick sig and avy!
