Halloween myths: Halloween is a pagan holiday.
This is false, it is a Catholic holiday that was set at the same time as a pagan holiday either to try and replace it or simply because of the similar symbolism.
Halloween is derived from the name "All Hollowed Eve". It was the night before "All Saints Day" and "All Souls Day", solemn days of rememberance. Just like Mardi Gras became a party before Lent All Hollowed Eve became an evening of parties and feasting. Since All Saints Day was a day to remember the martyrs and saints who had gone before as well as your own "sainted" ancestors this symbolism worked it's way into the pangentry and celebration that was All Hollowed Eve.
The confusion that occurs is because it is/was a Catholic holiday in a mostly Prodestant nation. Since Queen Elizabeth forbade all observances connected with All Souls' Day Prodestants did not and have not observed it. As such in the US there was no custom of "knocking at doors to beg for a "soul cake" in return for which the beggars promised to pray for the dead of the household". There was however plenty of pranks.
Those pranks (a tradition from Scotland and Ireland where they called it "mischief night") became so bad that in the 1920/30's boy scout troops organized neighborhood "trick or treating" as a way to counter act the often destructive pranks that had become common from tipping outhouses to cruelty to animals and people. Hence the phrase "trick or treat". By treating the children you were preventing the tricks.
...and there you go. All Hallows' Eve
My favorite memory would be trick or treating with my friends family when I was 12 and watching old black and white vampire movies afterward.
