How should i straighten my hair, and still keep it healthy.

Well I've wanted straight hair for a very long time. In terms of length, my hair is down to my shoulder blades when its wet. My hair is very, very curly and very thick. I hate my curly hair, but refuse to cut it shorter. I want it about another 2 or 3 feet longer. I have a regular flat plate straightening Iron but, when I was my hair and it dries. Poof! my hair is curly again! So does anyone have any suggestions about how to 1. straighten my hair, and 2. mabey make it grow a little bit faster. Thank you very much!!!!!!
