IMO desalination is the most stupid solution to the water crisis. What about the waste?

The hypersaline brine has the potential to harm ecosystems, especially marine environments in regions with low turbidity and high evaporation that already have elevated salinity. Examples of such locations are the Persian Gulf, the Red Sea and, in particular, coral lagoons of atolls and other tropical islands around the world.

The benthic community cannot accommodate such an extreme change and many filter feeding animals are destroyed when the water is returned to the ocean. It is more of a problem as you move inland, as one needs to avoid ruining existing fresh water supplies such as ponds, rivers and aquifers. As such, proper disposal of "concentrate" needs to be investigated during the design phase.
    from Wikipedia

Seriously when we can do simply things like saving water in house holds or use recycled water to water crops or for outdoor use. Desalination just seems like waste of money time and energy.

Most envrionmentalist aren't the problem they are the solution. And if they don't want something through then there is an obvious reason for it.

Regardless of how much resources we actually have left it seems the only way we can have population growth and live sustainable is if we cut resource consumption - got to think about all our great grand children too y'know!

    @Len

I did not know that. Thanks for the info.

Your opinion and my opinion on environmentalists differ. Every environmental group here in southern utah has done countless damage to the environment in the name of saving it. I do not see them as the solution for anything.

Your oppinion is diffrent and I respect it. We simply disagree.

The primary reason you don't see desalinization plants is because of Market pressures. Boiling and condensing sea water is energy intensive process. And with the price of natural gas still climbing, it's unlikely that it will ever become a viable solution in California. The reason why Saudi Arabia is adopting the technology is because natural gas is normally a waste product that they flare off in their oil field production, so energy costs are relatively low (at least compared to the alternatives)
So if they build the oil platforms they want on the coast they can redirect the waste gases to powering desalinization plants to take care of their water needs? Fire 'em up!

Oh wait, the environmentalists don't want us to drill for oil in the US.

Well, since the California coast is not an area with "low turbidity and high evaporation that already have elevated salinity" such as a gulf, sea, lagoon, or island then it should be the perfect place for such plants.

The population growth has risen dramatically in the last 100 years n yes,it is a problem because the demand for things has increased meaning that the resources that is currently exist for us to use will be exhausted in time. What people need to do right now is to look for alternative sources of things to use as a substitute for current things like oil and water.By doing so will allow the human race to thrive and endure.

Like money they are not finite resources. Water goes around and comes around in a cycle. Plants and animals grow, reproduce, and die. Even oil is being discovered to be produced by a much faster rate then previously believed. It's not something you just run out of one day. You cultivate them and manage them and then you end up with more then you started with.

We won't be able to keep up with all the resources that we need, one day we will be out of water and we will need to either find a new source or just die.

    THE RULES!

I'm on my grind in search to find whats on my mind, its one of a kind!

" over time i have found that we humans are like a virus rather than mamals"(Matirx movie). We spread and consume natural resources and then when its all gone we go some else and spread some more. Although this life, we must control overpopulation for the sake of man kind itself.
