![]() | Scary Side Of The Internet Earlier this week I was in a bit of a mess. I had to get into contact with the person who is coming here to replace me. This is to let them know what to expect here in Cuba and what to bring and what not. But All I had was a name and state. I have never been tech savy but I was able to get online and get their email address. I also found out they lived in mayport. I have always heard you can find out a lot about someone online but I didn't think I could. You can imagine how happy the person was that I got in touch with them. But I started to immediately think, what about some serial killer or rapist or child molester. They can just get only and do the samething I just did. The right of privacy in the US has always been presupposed in fact it was Chief Justice Douglas who beleived the right to privacy was so inherent that it didn't even need to be put in the constitution. Indeed being an American I felt funny in my youth going to foreign countries because people ask so many in-your-face questions and it took me awhile to get used to that. But let's admit it the internet has now trumped that and even I used google earth to see a house I used to live in many years ago. Should the internet be controlled and regulated? I personally don't but I am also not comfortable with the fact that tracking people down is so easy. Right now I would have to say no it should not be regulated but I don't know if I will always feel that way. |

![]() ![]() | Re: Scary Side Of The Internet Yeah, you can be tracked down easy. You just have to know how to cover your tracks online, to make yourself untraceable. Which I don't know how to do that, however am also not too afraid of someone tracking me down, I say bring it on! *Holding my sjambok.* Would be nice of them to try a regulate something, however the internet isn't very regulated and policed as much as anything else. It's more like a world of unlimited knowledge and data. Its hard to regulate unlimited data.

Yes I believe the internet should be regulated somehow, but currently I don't believe it can be done. It would require too much of a commitment for any government to invest in. Censorship is a form of regulation, and I believe that China is doing their best to censor anything remotely related to democracy, but heck it's costing them. They might have the labour resources to sustain a project of that calibre, but I wonder how long it'll last. The Australian government recently attempted to introduce some sort of internet censorship too, but scrapped the plan almost immediately due to widespread outrage at the very concept of censorship, having to bypass the Freedom of Information Act, financial limitations, the list goes on. Regulating the internet is a very daunting task. I believe it should be done, but I don't believe it can be done. The cyberworld is simply too large and elaborate to police.

![]() ![]() | Re: Scary Side Of The Internet I guess it can be scary if you stop to think about it. People have a false feeling of safety and anonymity online, but it is just a bubble easy to burst. I guess as long as we are conscious of this possibility it can help us what are up to share online. |

![]() | Re: Scary Side Of The Internet I don't really know how to brush away my digital footsteps, but I do know how to be subtle (oh god its out in the open). I'm a pretty paranoid person, but it'd actually be exciting to me if someone tried anything.

And yes lol, I completely agree. Give in a little and they'll keep wanting more. Lololol you're paranoid yet you're excited at the prospect of someone trying to track you down? I don't know about you but I wouldn't want a stalker lol.
