Torture or Reasonable Acquisition of information?

Ok i got this idea from another thread on here that's pretty good
but i thought of something else at what point does it become torture
if peoples lives are at stake? An example would be people are gonna die with in hours maybe a day and you need the info a certain person has and you need to get the information by any means you have. would you torture them to get it it would you call it a Reasonable Acquisition of information?

if your against tortures give a reason why your against it and what would be a better way to get it if you only had a day or maybe a few hours to get this information from someone who would rather die ?

for me i would think it would called Reasonable Acquisition of information because lives are at stake and any other method would not work so in that one instance the word torture would not be used in such a manner.

    what does everyone else think?

Re: Torture or Reasonable Acquisition of information?

I think that torture is just a way to get someone to say what you want to hear. Don't really think that it'd be the truth. What they do tell you before what you're doing actually kills them should be taken with a grain of salt. The people that would be tortured would probably have been pre-conditioned so that they could withstand someone beating them until the brink of death.

So, I'm not for or against torture or RAI as the jargon name; ha-ha! I'm just not so confident in the results actually giving me liable information.

It's like beating your wife until she says that she loves you. She actually hates you because you beat her but she says loves you in the heat of battle and you're content afterwards; ha-ha!

that's true it could be false but what other way could there be to get the things you need from them? i would be willing to back anything that would get you the results you needed but i haven't seen anything or have heard of anything that would actually get the results you need if there was something at stake and it had to be got some how

Isn't there an injection that you can give someone that forces them to only tell the truth? I think I've seen it on tv before but how knows it might just be television... LOL! I think I saw it on House or some other medical show.

truth serum is a good idea butt that's not really a good alternative since have the truth coming from them can be indirectly given to them and they are more under more a more suggestible state at least i think so which make me tbhink it would not work.

and some *tortures* as you call them arnt as bad as they sound like water boarding its a controlled method so they cant really die from the gagging affect they get from it. and like i said if you can tell me a better method of extracting information then im all for it but that just seems a better way of Acquisitioning
what you need. since it would not be torture since there is a real reason for it.

torture would be more of a pointless method to hurt someone for the heck of it

Re: Torture or Reasonable Acquisition of information?

Sodium Pentahol (spelling?) is not a be-all-end-all either.
Truth serums can be counteracted by simply talking about anything else that omes into your head. And if you torture them while they're under the effects, they can develop psychoses that prevent them from being helpful at worst, to just giving them more to talk about (it hurts so much, etc.). It's not that great an idea.

As for torture itself? Since when has it ever been a good idea?
"It's a GREAT way to get information!" Wrong.
It's a great way to get falsified information that was said just so you stop the pain. There comes a point where people will say whatever it is they think you want to hear; if you can't get the truth out of them without it, you're lucky to get it out of them through torture.

"People did it all the time in the past." Yeah, and?
In all historical accounts most people quote about ye olde empires and kingdoms using torture to seek out their enemies, you'll also note the massive death toll as they just kept going, and the little amount of success they had compared to it.

"But it's a necessity." Since when?
Why not simply ask people in a standard interrogation rather than resorting to interesting methods of inflicting pain? No amount of rationalizing will change what you're doing, and the first scream of protest you hear when you do it will prove whether you are messed up enough to not care at all and thus prove that you don't care about results... or that you can't stomach it much and you want to stop it.
In no movie or series, does torture ever lead to the answers. It's always fear if anything, but no physical pain.

Torture on any front is a stupid idea unless you just want to hurt the other guy.
