I think you're missing the meaning in what people say. When they say Soldier, they mean anyone who's served, and are not singling out Sailors or Marines.

A soldier is someone who serves in a Military, be it Air, Ground, or Naval.

I do have to agree though that service men and women in the US don't get the recognition and respect that they deserve, in fact, they some times get the opposite of what they should be given.

I really do wish that people would realize that if they don't like War, they should take it out on the politicians that start them, and not the soldiers who fight them.

I agree with aceman about soldier meaning not only the army. Although people do focus on the army and the marine corp. I guess it is because people get this image of their neighbors and sons running through a hail of gunfire. People don't realize that that isnt the only dangerous career in the military.

Beast, the tearn "SOLDIER" here in San Diego sense I live here is a general tearn to describe any one in the armed forces simply because its a lot shorter then rattling off all the branches of service. Its not to glorify a single branch and discount the others, its not to disrespect the sailers, airmen, marines, and so on. All be it I know that each branch would like to be recagnized and not under the generic word "soldier" as that is the army, but people are smart enough to know the difference, at least in San Diego anyways for the most part. So your anger of a word that is ment to describe a service man in the army, which so happenes to also be the generic tearm for any one in the armed forces regardless of the branch is uncalled for, but I can understand your frustration.

Like what aceman said, you're blowing it way out of propotion. If we were without just one branch of the U.S. military we'd be damned. Don't get so worked up over it. The army may be "numerically superior" but that's just the way it is, we constantly need more and more soldiers heading to the front lines to defend the freedoms we wouldn't have otherwise, not that I advocate the way our liberty is preserved, but the fact of the matter is a soldier is someone who is engaged in military service so that means all marines, sailors, army soldiers, naval men, special ops, etc.

It is just that sometimes as a Sailor or Marine (can't speak for Airmen since they are not part of the Navy) when people picture the Soldiers they picture as Poohead put it someone running through a hail of gunfire. And you know a lot of people are surprised when I tell them I have been deployed to a desert.

It was sort of like that time I was watching the news and Bill Clinton said the Army was so strecthed thin the Navy needed to Develop an explosive ordnance disposal team. The Navy has had an EOD team for over 60 years and infact it is so intense compared to other branches disposal units it is considered special operations. Itjust shows that when the american people think of a armed warrior the most vivid characteristic of that a Soldier. After all many states have no Marine or Naval Base. Army is as big as the other two branches.

Atrocities were mentioned in bad taste and let's admit it, that could have been any base in America, and all the branches sadly have had members who have killed their own.

Here's the thing,
I hate politicians, I do. It's all the corruption and the problems that arise out of it. I do not respect most politicians unless I truly feel they have earned it (which is...incredibly rare.)
However, I respect soldiers and the military (all branches). Soldiers risk their lives fighting for the politicians. Soldiers are what win and fight wars. I respect the aspect of serving a country they love in protection of others.

However, with war comes bloodshed, so of course there's going to be atrocious acts. Soldiers also have to follow orders and do whatever possible to survive. That said, like in every group there are some that take it as a ride to kill and enjoy doing so. And there's massacres of innocents and horrible occurrences. I do not respect those soldiers or their actions. But their kind is not the entire makeup of the military. It is unavoidable, in every group there is going to be someone that brings down the image of the rest.

They THINK they are special operations. EOD has to go out with a QRF or some sort of armed escort. Usually Army. The people who actually conduct route clearance and go looking for IEDs are Engineers.

The reason why people see Army as the figure head of service is because of stereotypes. General populous see images of Infantry doing the fighting on TV so that's what the believe. Not to short change any branch but in reality, Marines and Army are doing the dirty work in Afghanistan, Iraq is a hearts and minds war and every branch is doing something for it.
