I think it's time for you to delete the partition(s) and start over again.
so i got my friends 300gb and my 40gb hard drive corrupted or unable to format. i have tried the "right click on My Computer and choosing manage and then disk management." i have full and quick formatted them but i get the "unable to format."
i have also right clicked the drive and chose format (quick and full) and i still get the "unable to format." did i truly corrupted these drives where i cant format to fix them anymore? is there no program to help me? please help.

i have tried that prior to formatting. both of those options dont seem to work
Have you concidered that both the drives might be borked?
Drives that have not been handled with care, especially external drives, break easily. I lost my 80 gig external drive that I used for my college work when I rolled my jeep a few years ago, and failed a major assignment because of it.
they worked before. man, external hard drives are so unreliable.
Doesn't matter if they're reliable or not, they contain extremely delicate moving parts and are prone to faliure. I'm telling you from very expensive experience that event he slightest hard jostle could damage the drive. Just because they are external doesn't mean that they are portable and can take a beating.
If using the normal format doesn't work, and Disk Managment tool doesn't work, then it might be the possiblity that the drives are borked and they might need to be replaced.
I would suggest taking the drive out of its enclosure and putting it in your computer normally and see if the problem is with the external drives IDE controller
im not going to put it in my pc to check it. ill just get my cousin to see if he can fix it. if not, then yeah, they are messed up. they have been used heavily (putting data on it too much)
