Grumble Grumble Grumble
To the computer, the iPod is essentially a 'Flash Device', just like your USB flash drives. If you yank it out without doing a proper 'eject' some of its file system 'state' (which is cached in computer memory) hasn't had a chance to be written to the iPod. So essentially, you corrupted the iPod's file system...
Moral of this story, always do a proper 'eject' of removable, writable media before yanking it out of the computer...
