A riot shield, hurled weapon, oar, dinner plate, frisbee, and lots more all rolled into one tough laptop. Prices? I'm not really sure about the standard or average market price of these laptops but a friend of mine bought a toughbook for less than a thousand. I've seen some with prices that are equivalent with macbooks tho.

im not worried about being clumsy, and i personally thing the Toughbook looks ugly as sin. however, i do realise that for what i am going into, a Mac is more useful. all the PCs in the class i will be taking are Macs. (i plan to major in Graphic Design)

however, Legend has a good point too. Dells come with a really good warranty. but, i checked the prices on Dell yesterday, and the cheapest Antivirus software they would sell was either None ($0) or McAfee ($79, 15 months). i had McAfee on a computer a while bacvk, and it was alright, but i donno wether or not to buy it from the factory or to go get it from Staples or even Wally-World.

Don't worry about the software, those you can all skip out of. You can always purchase them later when they get cheap or go with a free alternative. Another thing I like about Dell is the fact that they gave me actual Windows cd along with all the original drivers and software that were included on the laptop. Many companies that sell desktops and laptops don't include original software.

Remember if you go with dell you should always research the model first, some of the models have expandability for the memory module, so you can save even more by buying the least amount of memory possible from them.

Re: Laptop Battle- Dell of HP?

Yea, I like Macs the best, though they are pricey and I don't own one myself. I went to art school and having a PC was a huge disadvantage.. but if you don't mind going to the school's computer labs than it's no problem. It's just that a majority (if not all) of the programs that they use are exclusive for Macs... And Apple is generous about including the iSuite with your new computer which is really nice.

I'd recommend buying a laptop after you are completely sure of what you're majoring in.

But don't get the Air, that's just for fancy business men who like to look cool and carry their computer around in an envelope. With one USB and no CD drive, it's pretty useless.

Ahh...that is one of Mac's strengths, it is NEARLY virus free so you don't really have to worry too much about your laptop being infiltrated by viruses. Only a few known viruses can affect a Mac and someone might be too careless or unlucky to get one. Before i used Parallels Desktop(on the Imac) i never had any antivirus software, but because i also booted it up with Microsoft the antivirus became a necessity.

However, i don't think that Macs have a high security system. There are more microsoft users out there and therefore it just becomes the likely target of those virus wizards out there.

And yeah, i think Toughbook looks kind of an ugly brute too(by computer standards). A fancy snobbish high falutin businessman(with an Air) being hit in the head by a happy-go-lucky roadkill collector's Toughbook might be pretty interesting to watch.

Agreed, the weakest among the macbook family but yeah...undeniably it looks darn good. I think Apple went too extreme with it, yeah it's slim but that's just too much. IMO it's more of a vanity item than a decent machine. Putting a laptop inside a manila envelope just doesn't make sense to me...

i think the MacBook Air is more or less just Apple's way of saying, "look what we can do!"

well, i probably wont need an Antivirus for a while anyway, as i dont plan on hooking it up right to the internet as soon as i get it. however, with Dell i get 6 months of Earthlink for free.

i looked at the 1525 (15.4") and i think 1720 (17"). both where similarly equipped and the 1525 cost like 100 bucks more. I had them booth have like 2 or 3 GB memory and 120GB Hard Drive. and boothe where red and had red mice

Re: Laptop Battle- Dell of HP?

I would go with a dell cause they have those alienware and that is what i have and there very good. so dell has to be doing something good to make one of the best gaming computer if not the best. Dells are very nice anye way i have always have had a dell.

Quote:
Home/Consumer Class: including Inspiron, and XPS brands, emphasizing value, performance and expandability:

Inspiron - consumer desktop and notebook systems

XPS - enthusiast and high-performance desktop and notebook systems

Alienware (XPS Extreme) - high-performance gaming systems

Business Class: including OptiPlex, Latitude, and Precision, where the company's advertising emphasizes long life-cycles, reliability and serviceability:

OptiPlex - office desktop computer systems

n Series - desktop and notebook computers shipped with Linux or FreeDOS installed

Vostro - small-business desktop and notebook systems

Latitude - commercially-focused notebooks

Precision - workstation systems and high-performance notebooks. Some of them includes Linux preinstalled. [40]

PowerEdge - business servers

PowerVault - direct-attach and some network-attached storage (NAS)

PowerConnect - network switches

Dell EMC - storage area networks (SANs)

Peripherals: Dell has also diversified its product line to include peripheral products such as USB keydrives, LCD televisions, and printers.

Dell monitors LCD TVs, plasma TVs and projectors for HDTV and monitors
Services and support:

Dell On Call - extended support services (mainly for the removal of spyware and computer viruses)

Dell Solution Center - extended support services similar to Dell On Call for EMEA customers.

Dell Business Support - a commercial service-contract that provides an industry-certified technician with a lower call-volume than in normal queues; it covers hardware and some software support.

Dell also offers Red Hat and SUSE Linux for servers; as well as "bare-bones" computers without pre-installed software (available on n Series by default and by request on XPS and Inspiron systems) at significantly lower prices. Due to Dell's licensing contract with Microsoft, Dell allegedly[citation needed] cannot offer those systems on their website and customers have to request them explicitly. (Dell does offer those systems on their web site at Dell Precision Open-Source Workstations with Linux ).

Dell has to ship such systems with a FreeDOS disk included in the box and must issue a so-called "Windows refund" or a merchandise credit after sale of the system at the "regular" retail price.

Discontinued products/brands:

Axim - PDAs using Microsoft's Windows Mobile (discontinued April 9, 2007[41])

Dimension - home and "small office, home office" desktop computers (discontinued July 2007; replaced by Inspiron desktops)

Dell Digital Jukebox - MP3 players (discontinued August 2006)

Dell PowerApp - application-based severs

Re: Laptop Battle- Dell of HP?

well, if i spend the money, ill get it red

since i have about 1100-1200 bucks in the fund, i think I'll splurge a little bit here and there (color-coordinated mouse:$26)

Perhaps further on in life, ill get a Mac, but i think for college, i'll pass. they start at 1099
