Aww man, where do you live Len? Make me one ...
I prefer Desktop. They are not easy to steal so quickly, it provides you with better features, and hey, you don't have to carry a mouse with you when you can't use the pad on the laptop.

So far, I think the general consensus is a desktop . . . Any tips on what model I should get?

    Re: Laptop vs. Desktop

I hate my desktop cuz it hasn't had upgrades in a long time, but it's kept up ever since I've had it.

I'm going to get a better laptop for college since I'll probably be on the run around campus a lot and it'll be more space-efficient in the dorm than a desktop would. It'll probably be around the same specs as fled79's friend.

How does upgrading work for laptops?

    Like LenMiyata mentioned.
You can't go wrong with the Dual core processors at this time, the quad cores are a bit too far ahead of their time and overpriced right now.

    Re: Laptop vs. Desktop

How often do you really need a laptop anywhere? In all honesty, its going to be used for work. Is he going to be breaking it out on the street or in a shop to start typing?

Get a desktop. Much easier to upgrade, cheaper to get a good spec one, with laptops you are paying for the ability to move it anywhere, if you want quality as well you have to pay a lot extra, and also easier to get a bigger HD/extra HD for.

Both Dell and HP are competing for market share, and tend to have the best prices... Shuttle also offers online sales of complete SFF systems (which are great for LAN parties!!!) directly to the buying public...

    Re: Laptop vs. Desktop

I prefer my Desktop more than a laptop. With a desktop I can always sit in a comfortable chair, in a plae that is familiar to me, and kick back. A laptop doesn't really strike me as tha great. Yeah it is portable, but I don't really see much of a need for it.

Anywhere you wanna go you can take it, but if you want to print something, scan soemthing, you need other things to give you that capability. Can't exactly take it to the mountains.
