This really depends on what you want to do with your laptop...

As an example, if you want to watch fansubs, then you do a GOOGLE search for the 'C.C.C.P.' codec pack...

If you want virus protection then a search for 'NOD 32' is in order, as within the hacker community, this is the package that has the reputation for the best 'bang for the buck'...

Well, I was thinking of regular user setup; essential programs such as antivirus/antispyware, multimedia programs & internet applications

Len pretty much said them all I would also go and download CCleaner for registry issues and unused items (corrupted files, 0 byte, etc.).

As for the antivirus I would recommend Kaspersky since they are having a sale and you can also use the license on 2 other computers not including your laptop for 60$ unlike NOD32 which at the moment which only supports one computer for 60$ both are very good thou and will get you out of a pickle.

And yes for the internet application use Firefox with some of the recommended add-ons and go on and check their skins if your used to the IE look.

If you need any other applications just ask I know a lot of programs for many various things.

Thnx a lot & btw, Is it necessary to install a burning program to burn CD's & DVD's or not? since I got Windows Vista

I wasn't aware that Vista had a burner...? And if it does its probably not too good I would assume since I haven't heard anything about it.

If you have money I'd go ahead and buy Nero since it can do pretty much anything, but if you can't I've found a nice free burner you can use.
