I don't know why it doesn't work, but I suggest this program... I use it to play all my .MKV files.
It's better for videos than WMP, at any rate... Much sharper image...

Combined Community Codec Pack and use media player classic. If you don't have it, just google it.

After downloading the codec pack make sure you enable mkv playback.

The VLC media player by Video Lan will play basically every file format you could think of and you don't have to download additional codec packs for it either.

while that is true to some degree, but VLC wont support most mkv formats, (i know >.<)

taken from ggkthx playback issues with vlc

Why no VLC?
We use softsubs for our releases. VLC can (and will) break softsubs very easily, and also doesn’t preserve subtitle styling. It strips all coding in the {} brackets, and will reveal whatever was in the {} brackets as normal text. Hence, we do not recommend using VLC. If you come to us telling us you were using VLC, we are probably going to ignore you, or at least tell you to quit using it…

(There are also some technical reasons against VLC that’re relevant to them encoder folks.)

Re: Why!? (.MKV player issues)

zerogravit had about the best answer for you, zoom player works best with that codec pack, ecause i personally use it i can say it works. You can choose to discard the embedded font, or go onto a webpage that offers fonts for download and find the one you need when the errors pop or contact the people that made the .mkv and ask them which font they was using.

hope i helped.
