There are some people in Japan that loves anime and there are some people in the U.S. that loves anime as well. I am a Pinay and I live in the Philippines and I know some anime of myself. They also show anime here even sell manga in other book stores. ^_^

Anime is big in Japan but not as big as many Westerners think. Only the really big prime time series are well known (e.g. Naruto, Bleach, etc.). Manga is actually a lot more popular than anime.

As to where anime is more popular it's easy: In the cities.
More people, richer people => more popularity.

Not everyone knows about anime in Japan. That's impossible.
Anime is Japanese by default so 'U.S. anime' doesn't exist.

firstly, anime is more popular in japan than it is here. i actually wouldnt associate the word popular with anime in america.

    do styles change? seriously?

anime is made in japan, and dubbed here. its the same exact thing; same drawings. so no.

There are a lot more anime and manga available in Japan than there is in the US, sadly. Just think there could be better anime out there somewhere that we don't get to see.

Actually... you guys get just about everything worth seeing nowadays. A lot of it is produced with Western audiences in mind, specifically because you guys are buying more DVDs than the casual Japanese market. Granted, there's a wide variety of porn, lolicon, BL and moe-centric porno spinoffs that are denied to western audiences: but recently you get a lot more of those than you probably need or want. Those are what sell here. The dedicated DVD buying audience are in the 40s, living in their parent's basement and have never had a girl or boyfriend. No one else can afford to buy 13 $60 DVDs each with one episode of "Tokimeki Breath of Happiness" and an underage upskirt figure attatched.

There's a misconception that all anime is on free network tv during reasonable hours and that Japanese people can flick on the tv any time and catch the latest episode of whatever they want. The reality is that 90% of animation in Japan is released either on video/dvd only (for $60 a pop), in theatres (for $20 a pop), airs on pay-tv or pay-satellite ($800+ a year), or airs after midnight (from 12:30ish-3:00am ish). There are very few reruns in Japan: so if you miss an episode, you're screwed. Most of the anime that does air during the day or primetime is aimed at children or elem-junior high students. I actually find it MORE difficult to follow anime in Japan than I ever did in the US. It's expensive, it's inconvenient, and it's embarassing...

Most Japanese people don't follow anime. It's not practical, or a particularly socially acceptable thing for working adults with lives to do.
