I think it's just really popular there. Are those people really going crazy for anime?! I think they are.
Grumble Grumble Grumble
The answer is Manga, yes, Anime No...
The fact is, is that over 60% of all published books are in the form of Manga. Not only does this include the action/adventure/drama/romance series that we know and love, it also includes Manga about fishing, cooking, golf, etc. etc.
However, Anime is still very much a niche market in Japan, with the fast majority of series that we know and love are only being shown in the post-midnight hour time slots. Two years ago, my sister hosted some visiting girl college students from Japan, and none of them knew about the 'Azumanga Diaoh' anime series, though they did know about the popular 4 panel comic strip... It's so much of a niche market that production groups are going so far as to Buy Air time to show their series, (instead of TV networks buying broadcasting rights), with the TV broadcast treated as little more then advertising for the DVD sales. And with the current Anime 'bubble' market in Japan, only the most popular anime series are actually making money...
Ok then instead of anime taking over japan, its manga right? so then i was wrong ok so manga does take over japan, anime is bound to catch up correct?

Anime is popular in Japan, just like cartoons are popular in every other country. I don't see why it should seem like it's "taking over" Japan.
