A bunch of hitmen. They're a very controversial historical group.
Taken from Japan File : "In the 1860s, Japan was in tumult as the Tokugawa regime looked to be coming to an end. Anti-shogun feelings were running high following the capitulation to the Black Ships. “Revere the Emperor, Expel the Foreigners” (“Sonno joi”) was the slogan of the day. To counteract supporters of the emperor, who had gathered in Kyoto, the shogunate set up a special police force who were recruited from amongst the leading swordsmen of Edo. But after being sent to Kyoto, many turned out to sympathise with the opposition. The group was disbanded, though a nucleus remained behind to continue."
I don't know much about the Shinsengumi, and I'm not from Japan, so I can't say much about them. Just to answer your question. There are plenty of manga with members of the Shinsengumi in them, many of which I have yet to read.![]()

LOL. I dunno. The Hijikata cosplayers always look so cool. And Okita Souji is such a baby (or so some manga make him out to be).

Hijikata is one badass. I think Okita Souji was 16 in real life.

Shinsengumi - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Has background, facts, and a list of members. Even mentions Peacemaker.
In Peacemaker, I liked the contrast between Okita's playful sweetness, and his ability to murder without hesitation. Or maybe the sweetness was a way to deal with his "demon" side?
>.< aw...... you guys aren't talking about the historical drama i saw one time on the Japanese channel? man... THAT was a good show... >.> but yeah, the Shinsengumi were pretty cool...
i refer to the leader as "the Ribbon Guy"...
