Starting on Monday (11/5), I'm going to start posting a series of basic Japanese lessons as an experiment. These lessons require no textbook and no fees. Any reading or workbook materials will be provided to you in .zip files attatched to each lesson. New lessons will be posted every week.
The lesson series will be from a total beginner's point of view, but that doesn't mean only beginners can participate. Anyone wanting to review points they've already learned can join in any time they like.
The beginner's course will move slowly and concentrate on "overlearning" fundimentals so that they'll not be forgotten later on in the game.
Completing the course will give you knowledge of the following:
-hiragana
-katakana
-50 kanji
-500+ basic vocabulary words
-basic grammar patterns
-the ability to read children's books written in hiragana
-the ability to enter a university-level Japanese 102 course (ie. skip 101)
The course will take anywhere from 6 months - a year to complete... depending completely on what it's students can handle.
+ If you want to join you will need +
-a notebook
-a pencil
-a red pen
-a file or folder (in which to keep print-outs)
-a printer (with which to make print-outs)
-AOL instant messenger or Trillian (with an AOL username enabled)
-20 minutes a day set aside to study Japanese
-Japanese character support for your browser/OS
(Using Japanese Text Input on a Microsoft Windows PC
Add Chinese and Japanese Characters to Firefox)
If you would like to join the course "officially", please post a note here.
Any folks who already know basic Japanese (and can demonstrate appropriate knowledge) are welcome to join as "tutors". We're going to be setting up an AIM list to help each other out.

Now I only have to get an AOL account (sheesh... my third messenger)
It's really great of you to make such a courseI hope you do fine with it ^^
I would like to join. I will just need to setup an AIM account...
I would like to join too. Question, do we send you our AIM addresses to you via pms or we post them in this thread?
Last call - I'm going to send out PMs collecting AIM addresses for the 1st version of the student/tutor list tomorrow. If you want to join the student/tutor list, please post in this thread.
I won't collect any more names until AFTER the hirgana portion is completed (in about a month).
I'd like to join too.
Attitude of AO MODS, according to beast
Because they have obtained that level they are arrogant. You have to kep in mind when you talk about these guys they are kind of dorks who probably didn't excel at much and this is their only outlet to flex their muscles. Their egos would suffer no less so the the forum suffers some more. Watch one way or another they will probably repond to this post with a threat. But there are better forums out there. Private messege Zev.
I guess I'll also give it a try as well...got nothing better to do when I'm online so. I could possibly tutor as well. I'm not that good at explanations but I'm sure I can go over basic stuff when needed.
->:Be descriptive in your posts or its like you didnt post at all:<-
