The White Wolf is off to a good start
Question Japan and Fish

I am a vegetarian and was wondering... are there vegetarians in Japan??

My friend was a veggie for five years, but recently had to give it up because she went to study abroad and there weren't any host families willing to take her in because of the fact she didn't eat meat. So in order to live up her dream.. she gave up all her beliefs on eating meat. I would never do that, but I'd really love to go to Japan, I've always been interested by it's culture, language, and people.

So, veggie living in Japan.. possibilty or not?

Re: Japan and Fish

Just because there weren't any host families that were vegetarians doesn't mean that there aren't any vegheads at all living in Japan, lol. Also, you have to remember that Japan holds the largest fish market in the world. XD;

Everything there is practically tradition there, too. I wouldn't be surprised if vegetarians were looked down upon in their society.

Re: Japan and Fish

Well that sucks.

Yeh, I guess it makes sense to have atleast a few Vegetarians in Japan, but that would take loads of research and loads of knowledge about the area in which to move which I have no idea of..

I just wondered if Japan was ALL about fish and fish.. I'm hoping to God it's not , though.

True, I'm not sure of the thought of a country that has something against Veggerz :]
Maybe this was just a misunderstanding, but i can follow religion wise though.

Japan is definitely not all about fish and fish, that's a fact. Don't worry. They do love their tofu after all.

Re: Japan and Fish

Grumble Grumble Grumble

Though keep in mind that even with the traditional 'Zen Buddhist' diet, the flesh from warm blooded animals are not allowed, but anything cold blooded is considered fair game.

Traditional biases against a pure vegetarian diet isn't so much about religion, but more about biology. The fact remains that there is no traditional year round reliable vegetative source of vitamin B-12. So just in order to survive, traditional diets must include some animal sources. Its only relatively recent that non-animal sources of B-12 (radiation induced mutant yeast, petrochemical based synthetic vitamins, and cyanobacteria native to lakes of volcanic lye) have been developed that permits a pure vegetarian diet...

Re: Japan and Fish

In today's Japan, you can be a vegetarian just fine White Wolf.

As for the fish, Japan is an island nation. It's only normal that they eat a lot of fish.
