Maciful - miso soup is very yummy too. I love having that along with a cup of rice in the morning. ^_^

Octopus is yummy. Jellyfish too. I've never tried dinuguan but I know I couldn't bring myself to eat balut... I'm *sort of* okay with bugs if they're cut up so you can't see their legs and feelers anymore. They're less disgusting that way... and once you get over that initial disgust, they're actually not so bad to eat.

Miso soup's all right. I found that one bowl of miso soup + chawanmushi can keep me full for a couple of hours at least. I don't know why. As opposed to eating sashimi non-stop and NEVER feeling full.... +__+

@ exederz : I eat a lot at Japanese buffets too, but everyone else is usually too busy stuffing themselves to be shocked at the mountain of sashimi on my plate. Hahahah. That's all I ever eat at buffets. Sashimi, sashimi and more sashimi. I don't really go for the fried stuff coz you can get them anywhere.

I have not had the pleasure to try jellyfish. Sounds interesting. I don't blame you about the balut. I can't bring myself to eat that one. Maybe if someone chopped up some bugs and deep fried them in tempura and hot chili oil and didn't tell me until after I ate them...I may be okay with that.

I wonder where I can get some natto to try...

I don't think so...we've got safeway, walmart, bashas, albertson's and fry's...those are the major ones that I can recall at the moment..Of course there are several asian markets around. I'll check my market and see if they have any.

You'd have to learn first, though. I can't make any Japanese dish for nuts. I can *sort of* make norimaki because my host family showed me how, but I'm terrible at it - it almost always comes out squarish.

@ Kitty_Angel: It's hard to find natto here as well. Usually the only time I get to buy natto's when those Japanese food fairs come round like once a year... twice at most. If you're okay with "ugly" food, you should be okay with natto. It's the the sliminess and smell that make people squeamish, but ummmmm it's a nice savoury dish really In my opinion, at least.

Well, according to their site they have a store in KINGMAN, LAKE HAVASU CITY, FORT MOHAVE, BULLHEAD CITY, & HENDERSON.

But you could probably find it for less at an Asian Market.

Now if any of you are serious about learning to cook Japanese cuisine I would highly recomend The Japanese Kitchen by Hiroko Shimbo. She teaches cooking classes in Japan to non-Japanese so she knows how to explain things in a way that can be understood.
