    Japanese Karaoke vs Western Karaoke

When westerners hear the term "karaoke", they often think of it as standing up in front of a crowd in a half drunken state and singing with about 20+ people listening.

When Japanese use the term "karaoke", they mean a small room that can fit up to 6 people. The room is dimly lit, and you pay by the hour. Most karaoke boxes have a "drink til you drop" plan which is very affordable. You are in the karaoke box to sing and not to talk.

Karaoke literally translates to empty orchestra in English.
Kara -> Empty. Oke short for orchestra.

Yeah, I was never a fan of the 'public execution' style favored here in the West. Though I've never been to Japan, I did get to witness the 'Japanese' style when I was in Vietnam studying. I found it to be much more fun.

Re: Japanese Karaoke vs Western Karaoke

I've been known to rock the mic at ye local karaoke establishment. Actually, my school's Japan club (that I was unfortunately dragged along for) went to a Japanese restaurant. We reserved the back room which had the Karaoke room in the back. Unfortunately, one of the members was so GOD AWFUL that they closed the door to save the other patrons from having to listen.

It was sort of like a mix between the two styles. It was a little more private than normal Karaoke bars or whatever, but there was still room for twenty or so people in the room, which also included room to eat, of course.

Not just Japanese, a lot of Asian karaoke place is a small room like you described. I think its called karaoke box. I never been to a Western style one. If I do go, I won't have the balls to do a stand-up.

I used to know a flight attendant that would fly to Japan. He says that all the bars are about them some karaoke. They suck... but all LOVE TO do it.

The Japanese style is the tits! There's nothing better than seeing businessmen really putting some serious effort in singing the songs. Even after the umpteenth glass of beer.
I went to a karaoke club in Tokyo with some friends and I was baffled when I saw the available track list.
3 phone books full of songs! Insanity I tell you.

I'm far from being a good singer but I was damn proud of my perfect attempt at singing "Sit On My Face" by Monty Python.
