Kawaii - Japanese for "cute."

Senpai - Means teacher or big brother. (I used a online thing to define it a second ago, sorry. I knew the real meaning from Love Hina.)

Oniisan - Japanese for "older brother."

Sensei - A Japanese word for "master" or "teacher." It can also be used as a suffix.

Baka - Japanese for "idiot" or "stupid."

suka = whooshy sound. K-san: "the sound of swinging a baseball bat and missing." Togashi frequently uses it for punches missing.

Bishoujo - Pretty young girl.

Bishonen - Pretty young man.

Chibi - Japanese for "small." Often used to refer to deformed characters and various cute thingies.

Yuri - Basically the same thing as yaoi except it involves lesbian relationships.

Ureshii - Japanese word used to express happiness.


Sugoi - Japanese word used to describe something as "cool" or "awesome." Kakkoi is similar but not used for women. Suteki is used for "something wonderful" and "subarashii" is "something wondrous."

Shogun - Literally means "barbarian-subduing general" (refers to the subjugation of the Ainu in Japan). The shogun possessed the real military and political authority while the emperor was a symbolic leader.

Shoujo - Girl's manga. Many guys also enjoy shoujo but hate to admit it.

Shonen - Boy's manga

chan - Honorific meaning "little," "darling," etc. This is commonly used for cute animals and small children. It also can be used for romantic partneres and female friends.

Daijoubu - Japanese for "I'm okay."

Doujinshi - Japanese for fan comic/magazine. Commonly misunderstood to be perverted stuff but that's not true.

Ecchi - Used to describe anime/manga that have sexual material that isn't pornographic.

Hai - Japanese for "yes."

Hentai - Both "ecchi" and "hentai" mean "perverted" but the word is used in this case to refer to pornographic anime.

Hime - Japanese for "princess."

Itai - Japanese word used to express pain. Literally means "it hurts."Also the name of a medical condition caused by industrial pollution.

Kaiju - Japanese for "monster." Think Godzilla.

Akuma - Japanese word referring to Satan's equivalent.

Hakama - Really big pants worn by guys and Shinto priestesses.

Hara-kiri - Ritual disembowelment. Not fun.

Seppuku - Suicide, yet honorable while hara-kiri has negative connotations.
