You don't have to take formal lessons ^.^
I never did; I just learned by watching anime and J-dramas and reading comics. And yeah, obviously I had to have a dictionary or two to help with translations. It takes longer to learn that way, but well, I did my best under the circumstances.
awww cool well j anime dose help with eng subs too lol
but even asian music with the subs help too ^__^ i think
Just bear in mind the subs may not be entirely accurate
Sometimes it can be really difficult to come up with an adequate translation of a conversation in Japanese... it's the same with other languages. That's why it's best to NOT rely too much on subs. I started watching raws even tho my Japanese sucked, but it forced me to learn faster. The more you watch, read and speak, the more you'll understand about how certain expressions are used and what they might mean in different contexts (w/o referring to the subs).
Good luck! ^_^
i know over 500 words in japanese and around 200 characters (kanji). I had to teach myself though...i am currently a senior in high school, and they stopped offering japanese my freshman year. i'm pretty good when it comes to speaking, but i find hirigana and katakana (stink at spelling out japanese words) to be annoying. Not that it is very difficult, just alot to learn.
I kangae da ne...dame? Kakehiki wa tsuoi kimi no naka aiamachi wai kioi soto onaga, suki na dake tanoshimeba i sa...
Go, go boysZ!

~ Good evening, I am Foreshadow. I am a highschool student.
*bows*
I actually began my first year of Japanese (Nihongo) at the beginning of the semester (it's an independent study class--unfortunately not provided by my school as an "actual" one w/ other students ). Writing seems to be the most challenging part for me so far, which I guess makes sense...considering there are hundreds upon hundreds of characters, plus the different styles of writing them depending upon the context...(ie: hiragana, katakana, and kanji). X.X
*feels like passing out just thinking about it* @.@ / #.#
'Tis majorly interesting though--even if it is difficult. ^^
